Premiere. “La Sylphide”, choreography, stage design and costumes by Pierre Lacotte
March 2“La Sylphide” is an absolute symbol of romantic ballet. In this very production a ballet dancer Maria Taglioni was the first artist to dance on toes (“not for effect but for the sake of imaginative tasks”). Taglioni’s heroine really seemed to be miraculous creature, not a woman but a ghost who violated the laws of the earth gravity. The dancer skimmed on the stage surface almost not touching the floor and faded for an instant in a flying arabesque, as if she was carried by some wonderful power on the cutting edge of the curved foot. That “La Sylphide” had been staged for Maria by her father Filippo Taglioni and was carefully revived by the other French choreographer Pierre Lacotte one hundred and fifty years later.
